Xanadu cuts quantum memory costs by nearly four times with new algorithm

IQN (NewsDesk): Photonic quantum computing company Xanadu has announced a nearly four fold reduction in the cost of Quantum Read Only Memory, a key building block used in many quantum algorithms, by developing a new algorithmic technique based on dense encoding.

The improvement comes from reducing the non Clifford gate cost of the routine. Non Clifford gates are among the most expensive operations on a fault tolerant quantum computer, so cutting their number directly lowers the resources a machine needs to run an algorithm that relies on loading classical data into quantum memory.

The result adds to a steady stream of algorithmic advances aimed at making fault tolerant quantum computing more practical, as researchers work to shrink the hardware requirements for useful applications in areas such as chemistry, finance and optimization, rather than relying on better hardware alone.
