Xanadu partners with GlobalFoundries to mass produce photonic quantum components

IQN (NewsDesk): Photonic quantum computing company Xanadu has announced a new partnership with semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries aimed at scaling the production of photonic quantum computing components using standard 300 millimeter semiconductor fabrication lines.

The agreement is designed to allow Xanadu to mass produce its photonic quantum hardware using the same industrial scale manufacturing infrastructure already used to produce conventional semiconductor chips, rather than relying on specialized, low volume fabrication techniques that have historically limited how quickly quantum hardware companies could scale production. By leveraging GlobalFoundries’ established 300 millimeter production lines, Xanadu aims to significantly increase manufacturing capacity and reduce costs associated with building photonic quantum components at commercial scale.

The partnership reflects a broader trend across the quantum computing industry, with multiple companies increasingly seeking to align their hardware roadmaps with existing semiconductor manufacturing infrastructure rather than developing entirely new fabrication processes from scratch, a strategy seen as critical to achieving the kind of large scale, cost effective production that will ultimately be required to build commercially viable quantum computers at scale.
