Russia accuses Ukraine of attacking oil refinery after Zelensky says strikes will resume

IQN (NewsDesk): Russia says Ukraine has attacked an oil refinery in Ryazan, about 180 kilometres south of Moscow, hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that Kyiv was done with the energy ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump.

Moscow’s defence ministry said the Kyiv regime attempted a large scale attack on the refinery and that a fire broke out after drone debris fell on the site. It claimed Ukraine used 69 drones and four Flamingo cruise missiles. Authorities in the Ryazan region confirmed a fire at the refinery. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there had been no real pause, claiming strikes on Russian energy sites continued throughout the period.

Zelensky said Ukraine had paused attacks on Russian energy targets for three days at Washington’s request, but that Russia kept striking Ukraine’s power grid and oil facilities, killing about 100 civilians over the past week. He also accused the United States of withdrawing intelligence sharing and weakening Starlink access during the pause, and said Ukraine would only consider halting the strikes again in exchange for more Patriot interceptor missiles.

The exchange ends hopes of a short energy truce and deepens the rift between Kyiv and Washington, which has pressed Ukraine to stop hitting Russian refineries while arranging to buy Russian diesel to ease fuel prices.
