IBM expands AI and quantum research partnerships with IIT Bombay and IISc

IQN (NewsDesk): IBM has announced an expansion of its AI and quantum computing research collaborations with two of India’s leading academic institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and the Indian Institute of Science, deepening a partnership that first began in 2021.

The expanded collaboration spans several pillars, including agentic AI systems, energy focused AI models, and quantum high performance computing algorithms aimed at scientific and industry applications. With IISc specifically, IBM researchers will continue work on orchestration techniques that combine quantum and high performance computing resources, with the goal of accelerating scientific discovery through more efficient quantum centric supercomputing workflows. A key focus area involves developing next generation quantum HPC algorithms that leverage approximation tolerant classical diagonalization methods to improve quantum subspace iteration techniques, a technical approach aimed at making hybrid quantum classical computations more efficient.

IBM framed the expanded partnerships as part of a broader strategy to align its AI, hybrid cloud, and quantum computing expertise with India’s national research priorities, combining the company’s technical capabilities with the academic strength of two of the country’s premier research institutions. The collaboration is intended to produce research that is scientifically rigorous, industry relevant, and designed for real world impact, reflecting IBM’s continued push to position India as a significant hub for its global AI and quantum research efforts.
