IQN (NewsDesk): Ethiopian federal forces have retaken control of Mekelle’s Alula Aba Nega Airport from Tigrayan fighters, according to residents and reports from the Associated Press, marking a significant battlefield development just days after the Tigray People’s Liberation Front declared it was in a state of full blown war with Addis Ababa.
The recapture of the airport represents a notable setback for Tigrayan forces, who had seized the facility amid the region’s rapid slide back into open conflict following the breakdown of a fragile peace that had held since the end of the devastating earlier Tigray war. Control of the airport carries significant strategic value given its importance for troop movement, supply logistics and humanitarian access into the Tigray region.
