IQN (NewsDesk): Google Quantum AI announced on Thursday that it has experimentally demonstrated “magic state cultivation” on its Willow processor, a technique that could offer a practical solution to one of the most serious bottlenecks in quantum computing.
Magic states are a special resource that fault tolerant quantum computers need to carry out certain operations, and producing them efficiently has long been one of the field’s biggest resource challenges. The Google team, which includes researchers Craig Gidney and Emma Rosenfeld, says the experiment shows the cultivation approach works on real hardware rather than only on paper.
Google researchers cautioned that larger scale demonstrations are still needed before the method can support practical fault tolerant quantum computing. The result has also fed debate over how soon quantum machines could threaten today’s encryption. Castle Island Ventures co-founder Nic Carter said quantum computing timelines are generally compressing, with AI assisted improvements contributing to the acceleration, though he said no threat is imminent. Google has previously set an internal goal of moving to post quantum cryptography by 2029.
