France halts use of stun grenades after boy’s hand blown off in student protests

IQN (NewsDesk): France has halted the use of stun grenades by police, a decision that comes just days after a 15 year old boy had his hand blown off during student protests, with multiple groups accusing officers of using disproportionate force against teenagers taking part in the demonstrations.

The move follows a wave of unrest sweeping the country, with hundreds of thousands of people, many of them high school pupils, taking to the streets across France. Riot police have repeatedly clashed with protesters, deploying tear gas and stun grenades in confrontations that have drawn growing criticism over the scale of force used against what are, in large part, crowds of minors.

The suspension marks a significant policy shift for French authorities, who now face mounting pressure to justify the broader use of crowd control weapons during the ongoing wave of youth led demonstrations.
